The Dominican Republic has seven major international airports and a number of smaller domestic airports. Major airports serve all of the popular tourist destinations such as Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, and Casa de Campo.
At 240 miles long and 160 miles wide, the Dominican Republic is larger than the typical Caribbean nation. Its population is also relatively high, at about 9 million residents. Travelers should make efforts to fly directly or by connection to the airport that is closest to their resort or hotel. Roads in the Dominican Republic can be unfamiliar and even hazardous. Brave travelers with an excellent map can attempt to navigate their way across the country, but air travel may save both time and stress.
The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has deemed that the Dominican Republic is not in compliance with the International Aviation Safety Assessment Program. This program measures and judges the ability of a country to comply with international standards for air travel.

A number of the major international airports, such as Las Américas International Airport, Gregorio Luperon International Airport, and the Punta Cana International Airport, receive flights from international destinations. But travelers who are unable to arrange a flight directly to the airport that is closest to their resort can make use of domestic air service.
